Entactogens (also known as empathogens) are a class of psychoactive substances that produce emotional openness, empathy, warmth, and closeness to other people. Entactogens mainly cause a large release of serotonin, with some dopamine and noradrenaline. This mix makes the experience mildly euphoric and social, not strongly hallucinatory. The name comes from the Greek en ("within"), the Latin tactus ("touch"), and -gen ("to produce"). Together these parts mean "to touch within."
