Pinazepam is a habit-forming1 depressant1 of the 1,4-benzodiazepine class2, used primarily to reduce anxiety. In humans, it is described as producing little significant sedation or impairment of intellectual function and motor coordination compared with typical benzodiazepines. It differs structurally from other benzodiazepines by having a propargyl group at the N-1 position.3

Pharmacology

Pharmacokinetics

Pinazepam is rapidly absorbed after oral administration3 and produces two main active metabolites. Pinazepam and one of its active metabolites cross the placenta, although maternal plasma concentrations are usually substantially higher than fetal concentrations. Its elimination half-life is longer in elderly people.
