Addiction & Dependence
Psychological
HighPsychological dependence may appear as craving or as feeling unable to manage daily life without the medication. People with prior sedative-hypnotic addiction may face greater risk.
Physical
HighLormetazepam can cause physical dependence, with benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms emerging after dose reduction or discontinuation. This dependence is associated with altered GABA-BZD receptor-complex sensitivity. Withdrawal often resolves within 4-8 weeks, but about 10-15% of people may have symptoms for months, and rarely for years.
Toxicity
Residual effects after nighttime administration including sleepiness, impaired psychomotor and cognitive functions, and anterograde amnesia may persist into the next day; these effects are more pronounced in the elderly and may increase risks of falls.
Respiratory depression can occur, particularly in overdose or when combined with other CNS depressants; this effect may be life-threatening.
Jaundice has been reported as a side effect.
Blood disorders have been reported as a side effect.
Psychosis Risk
Paradoxical increase in aggression and confusion have been reported as side effects.
