Clonitazene
Clonitazene belongs to the 2-benzyl benzimidazole opioid family known as nitazenes, which were originally developed as analgesics1. It is classified as a depressant and habit-forming substance. In the ACMD report's account of single oral doses administered to former morphine addicts, clonitazene appeared to be about one-third to one-fifth as potent as morphine sulphate1. Clonitazene is not currently marketed1, and its psychoactive class is otherwise listed as unknown.

Addiction & Dependence
Psychological
HighAs a potent opioid, clonitazene carries significant psychological addiction potential with high abuse liability and reinforcing effects typical of the opioid class.
Physical
HighPhysical dependence is expected to develop with regular use, consistent with other potent opioids. Withdrawal syndrome would be anticipated upon cessation.
Toxicity
Clonitazene is approximately three times as potent as morphine. As a member of the nitazene family, which includes etonitazene at 1000-1500 times morphine potency, the lethal dose would be correspondingly lower than morphine in opioid-naive individuals.
