Buphedrone
Buphedrone is a synthetic cathinone first synthesized in 1928 by Hyde and colleagues1. It is a β-ketone analogue of cathinone and is reported to be roughly two to three times more potent than methcathinone, although this estimate is uncertain. The free-base form is highly unstable and prone to dimerization, so buphedrone is commonly distributed as salts, especially the hydrochloride form.

Pharmacology
Pharmacodynamics
Buphedrone potentiates dopamine release from dopaminergic nerve terminals in the brain, increasing endogenous dopamine concentrations. As a substituted cathinone, it is described as acting through binding to specific sites that increase endogenous monoamine levels rather than directly activating postsynaptic receptors, although the specific mechanism is not established.

Psychological
ModerateClassified as habit-forming. As a synthetic cathinone stimulant, it is expected to have abuse potential similar to other compounds in this class.
History & Culture
Buphedrone was first synthesized in 19281 as a synthetic analogue of cathinone, the stimulant naturally occurring in the khat plant. It belongs to the phenethylamine and cathinone chemical classes.2…
