2-Me-DMT is a tryptamine1 and atypical hallucinogen first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin. It is described as very mild, with tactile enhancement and auditory distortion rather than conventional psychedelic effects. Its methyl group appears to allow oral activity1, distinguishing it from DMT. Reports describe an unusual and unpredictable relationship between dose and effects, which can make its effects difficult to anticipate.

2-Me-DMT binds to serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors with low affinity and did not activate either receptor in the reported study. In rodents, it nevertheless induces the head-twitch response, a behavioral proxy for psychedelic activity. These findings leave the mechanism underlying this response uncertain.
